There’s been a lot of talk lately about Advent of the Mists MUD making a come back this year. I have been given it a lot of thought (due to my own itch for some great RP like we used to have), and will be entertaining the idea of starting Advent back up sometime this year. It won’t be this spring, may not even be summer, but like us on facebook or follow us on Twitter and you should get some of the first news about any developments.
The forums are still open, and we may start developing more plotlines and themes there in the meantime.
Yes the rumors are true, Advent of the Mists MUD is closing at the end of July. Cedric and Crystal no longer place the MUD on the top of their priority lists, therefor it has just fallen to the way-side.
However the website and forums will remain up, for at least the next 2 years since it’s paid for. Crystal still intends to flesh out world theme stuff on the website as a hobby. We are leaving the option open to maybe reopen the MUD if we decide we have time/desire to do so. And because of that we are not releasing the code-base, despite several inquiries.
As a parting gift, here’s a youtube video I started at the end of 2008 but never finished editing. I was saving it to help launch us into beta when the time came
Friday night is our annual anniversary here around Advent. So not only will I be giving away double RPP all week (and weekend), but this Friday I’ll also be doing a trivia night (with double RPP per question answered right and first).
To celebrate July 4th, we are giving away double rewards all day, even to our non-american player friends Rumor has it a new small area will be launched today too in order to start the RP for 2 other areas that are ready to launch as well We’ve also put in an OOC arena for sparring and playtesting of the combat and such, so feel free to use it for such. The OOC arena is -not- meant for a place to hang out and chat though.
I wanted to give some acknowledgment to Marauk and Adalon who have recently donated money to the Advent server costs. The server is now paid up until February 2010, which should leave plenty of room for advertising funds when we open for beta
Remember, we don’t ask for donations, and we certainly don’t give any in-game benefits for donations, but we will always give credit to our donators for showing their love of the game with their donations
Siramus put forth his creative effort and created the first quarterly Advent newsletter. These newsletters will hopefully give a glimpse of what’s been going on in game, what plans we have coming up, as well as player contributions. We will be setting up a method for signing up for the newsletter with the launch of a new website soon. In the mean time, feel free to email us at imm[@]adventmud.org if you are interested in receiving this newsletter by email.
Alpha testers will have access to the newsletter on the forum
We hope everyone had a good holiday, as we certainly did on Advent. A lot of players stayed up for some midnight RPP rewards last night, as well as many Christmas Day rewards.
We hosted a poll on the forum to decide what Cedric should work on next now that his semester is up, and the playerbase voted for the Summoning School. He’s already been hard at work working on the details for the school, as our builders can attest to as we try them out on them
Now Crystal is settling into her new house after the last 6 months of personal chaos, and can now put more focus on the MUD.
2009 is going to be an exciting year for Advent, so look for many good things to come
Please don’t login to Advent and ask us to help you set up your own MUD. We’re working on -our- MUD and honestly have no interest or time to help you with yours.
Also, we do not hire staff from strangers that happen to login to the MUD for the very first time. To review our policy, please read How to Become a Staff Member.
We will also not tolerate any OOC or IC real-life discriminatory behavior. This MUD is for the mature dedicated role-player. Power Gamers and players just looking to disrupt game play by consistent perverted actions and behavior need not login. As one of our players found out this evening, the latter will be site-banned.
Our sister MUD, Cities of M’dhoria is closing its doors this Sunday. We’ve already had an influx of some of their players hop on, and you guys are certainly welcome.
A few things I did want to note however:
1. Signing on Advent starts you out with a clean slate OOC. Any old grudges, drama, etc from CoM are not welcome nor will they be tolerated here. We’ve already experienced some “Well this person did this to me on CoM so I’m going to go after their character on Advent” type drama, and none of the staff here have any time or desire to deal with it. Anything like this that disrupts the gameplay and the players from having fun on Advent will result in immediate irreversible denial. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but we really want people to enjoy themselves on Advent without worrying about CoM’s past.
2. We are a perma-death MUD, which I know you guys aren’t used to. We’ve instituted two things to help ease the blow of losing a character, however. The first one is our RPP (Roleplay Point) system. Since we have accounts (and you should definitely create an account) any RPP you earn is added to your account, to distribute freely among all of your alts. If one dies, you can use your RPP on your account to upgrade a new one fairly significantly.
The second is experienced players getting added skill points during character creation. For every 10 RPP you have ever earned on your account (another reason to have an account), you get 1 skill point to give your character a skill when creating your new alt. You will receive these points with every new alt you make, they aren’t a “one time use” type of deal.
That’s two solid ways to not start out with a completely weak new character. And it all spans around the quality of your roleplay and how much RPP you earn
3. We are still in alpha testing. We hope to open up for beta later this year, where we will actually be advertising for players (we’ve done no advertising yet), but right now our main focus is development. There is still some fantastic RP going on, and we encourage people to roleplay their little hearts out as well as keep an eye out for bugs and consistency. But so long as people understand that it’s alpha testing, and our main focus will -not- be on the roleplay until Beta.
That’s all I can think of at the moment Happy Hunting!
