These guidelines and tips below are to help the areas of Advent flow consistently with each other. They are to be incorporated into all areas. Be sure to follow the guideline for building rooms on Advent.
- Describe what would be seen in a room in third person. Avoid use of the word “you”.
- Room descriptions should describe the room only. Do not mention specific mobs in a room description. (General descriptions of people, such as “Peasants swarm about this crowded square.” are fine.) Likewise, do not describe objects that reset in the room in the room description.
- At the end of the room description, describe what would be seen if someone looked in each direction, whether there is an exit or not.
- Add extra descriptions for any important nouns you name in your room description. For example, if you describe animal tracks on a trail, you might put an extra description describing what kind of tracks, where they lead, whether they are fresh, etc.
- All room exits should have their own description. This doesn’t have to be long, one sentence is fine. Describe what would be seen if someone were to look in that direction. In addition to exit descriptions, include what lies in each direction in the room description, whether an exit is there or not. Example: “The trail continues through the forest east and west. To the north and south, dense growth blocks any travel.”
- By convention, the first word and all major words in the room title should be capitalized. Examples: “The Mouth of a Cave”, “A Quiet Trail in the Forest”.
- Use common sense when making rooms. Don’t make any rooms that are impossible for mortals to get out of, or any impossible mazes. We especially don’t want any mazes near hometowns, this makes it difficult for newbies to navigate.
- Do not link rooms in your area to rooms in other areas. Also, do not reset objects or mobiles from other areas into your area. This is not safe and can cause crashes.
- By convention, do not use color in room descriptions or titles. The only exceptions are areas designed for newbies where use of color might help to guide them. There is to be absolutely no color in other room descriptions.
