Object Guidelines

These guidelines and tips below are to help the areas of Advent flow consistently with each other. They are to be incorporated into all areas. Be sure to follow the guideline for building objects on Advent.

  1. Object keywords should include every important noun and adjective in the object’s short and long descriptions. Example: An object with the short description “a rusted iron breastplate” and the long description “An old and rusted breastplate lies forgotten here.” should have keywords “old rusted iron breastplate”. This is important as players will try to use the obvious keywords when looking or getting the object.
  2. Object short descriptions should generally start with a lower case letter, unless the object’s short description is a proper noun such as a name. Examples: “a brittle parchment scroll”, “an aeromis feather”, “Isaera, the Sceptre of the Elven Kingdom”. Object short descriptions should NEVER end with punctuation.
  3. Object long descriptions should ALWAYS start with a capital letter and ALWAYS end with a period.
  4. Objects should have extra descriptions written for each one of their normal keywords. This can be done with one extra description or several, as long as each keyword is included in an extra description. Example: an object with the keywords “golden-hilted steel sword” might have an extra description with keywords “steel sword” describing the blade of the sword, and another extra description with keyword “golden-hilted” describing only the sword’s hilt.
  5. Familiarize yourself with the armorcalc and weaponcalc commands and use them whenever possible. Use of these commands ensures that all armor and weapon objects will meet consistency guidelines. If you need a weapon or armor type that is not listed, speak to a coder. If you would like to make a custom or magical weapon or armor item with stats outside the guidelines, speak to Jherlen.
  6. In general, do not use color in object extra, short, or long descriptions. Very special items may be allowed to break this rule, but these objects require approval.
